Week in Review

It’s Friday, which means another work week is in the books. We had some truly beautiful weather here in PA, although it was a bit cold. My company has a branch office in Phoenix (and my sister-in-law lives there as well) and I heard they were dealing with 110-degree temps. Yikes! I would love to live there someday, but I need to prepare myself for the extreme heat.

Anyways, here are a few things that caught my eye this week.

So Good They Can’t Ignore You

I read a great article on Monday. It was a summary of Georgetown Professor Cal Newport’s book of the same name. In his book (which I am eager to read), Cal discusses why you shouldn’t follow your passion as a career path. Instead, he believes you should work to make yourself indispensable at a specific set of skills. Cal believes that once you are skilled in your chosen field, the passion (and money!) will follow.

I tend to agree with this philosophy. Sometimes it gets overwhelming when someone tells you to “follow your heart” or “follow your passion.” What if you don’t know what your passion is? What if you can’t make a comfortable living in that field? It often feels like we’re forced to choose between what we love and what is practical, and that’s not always the case.

I’m not in the career field I thought I’d be in, but I love my job and I’m so glad it all worked out. Overall, I thought Cal brings a very refreshing perspective to this issue. For a link to buy his book, click here.

Gym Hiatus

It’s a major bummer, but I’m having a lot of pain in my knees lately. Unfortunately, I think I have tendinitis. So, starting today, I’m taking a week-long leg hiatus (I still plan on doing my upper body workouts). I’m also stretching and icing my knees regularly. I’m frustrated, but I have to remind myself I need to heal or it’ll only make things worse in the future. I’m also looking for good knee wrap recommendations. If you have any, send them my way!

New Music

I am always listening to music at work. I found a new track I like called “Heartshaker” by Tom Speight. If you’re on Spotify, check it out. He’s on Instagram, too: @tomspeightmusic.

Old Navy Wrap-Front Linen Blend Top

I bought this shirt last week and I love it. It’s perfect for summer: lightweight, flattering, and modern. It’s also on sale right now!
