Today I had the opportunity to do a community service project sponsored by my company. Our team was tasked with cleaning up litter in a busy park south of Pittsburgh. We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day and we had a blast walking around in our bright orange vests.
I’m thankful to work for a company that emphasizes the importance of giving back to the planet and the community.
Our group was tasked with trash pickup near the swimming pool part of the park. As you may have guessed from the content of this blog (haha), this task was right up my alley.
Although it didn’t look like there was much litter at first, when you started to look closer, there was quite a lot to be found. We cleared a variety of things: cigarette butts, a broken construction barrel, water bottles, some car parts, plastic bags, and even a pair of underwear (my inner germophobe was so glad we had a litter grabber for that one).
After a few hours we reconvened for lunch and then we were able to leave for the day. I was surprised how tired I was. I actually fell asleep during the car ride home!
Overall it was a great day spent with friends doing something that helps the community. Things are pretty busy for me right now, but I’d love to volunteer more often. I think it’s important to give back and I can always get behind a cause that helps the environment.
